Walking for 5 minutes from my current appartment, you will reach to St. Joseph Oratory, an old and huge church. Some religious people believe that God will grant your wish if you climb all more-than-300 steps from the street to the church on your knees. There is also an escalator which takes you up, but it is not proved that God will grant your wish if you stand on your knee on one of its steps to reach to the church.

Saint Catherine Sale

Each year there is a summer sale in Saint Catherine, one of Montreal's main streets . They close the street not allowing automobiles to pass. Every shop brings it's stuff out for sale and it is usually tax free. It is 2.5 kilometer long and you can just fool around for hours. I tried 5 pairs of shoes in 5 different places but they did not have my size. I could find a Falafel sandwich only for $3 anyway.

La Ronde

We went to La Ronde the other day. It's a cool place with horror roller coasters. Above picture is Goliath, the highest and longest roller coaster in Canada. You can experience a 52 meter drop at the speed of 110 Km/h.

But do I look like a stupid guy who enjoys screaming while falling down like hell in a metal monster? No way! I preffered a happy ride on Merry-go-round. It's a peacefull life man!

Being with about 400 other Iranian colleagues and friends, I did not feel lonely at the new year's time. We had haft-sin (with red fish!), Nowrooz' candies, music, dance, singing, joojeh-kabaab and even sabzi-polo-ba-mahi for Nowrooz' night.
Hope you all have enjoyed Nowrooz. Wish you a nice year, with happy memories in the end.

Reaching close to projects deadline, I stay at my office at university these nights to the morning. Beside the advantage of being quiet and feeling alone, it has the advantage that I can see the sunrise from my window which I could never see if I tried to wake up early.

Ski Bromont

I dedicate this post to Sepehr the handsome cousin of mine, and all the good times we had together. He was the one who taught me how to ski - or snowboard, better I say.
By the way, we went to a ski trip yesterday. Ski Bromont, a nice ski resorts near Montreal, has so many tracks for all skills, from short slightly sloped tracks for beginners to long and risky advance tracks with many jump platforms (Here is a video of that). After trying a short intermediate track, I found that I can remember the skills Sepehr taught me, so I decided to try a long more advanced one, in which I got lost (!!) I was worried to miss the bus back to Montreal, but fortunately I could find my way back before that. That was fun anyway.
The other good fact of the ski trip was that I could go to bed at 9 for the first time here and wake up at 7 am, unlike other days in which I went to bed at 6 am and woke up at 2-3 pm !

P.S: SEPEHR!! AGEH INJA RO MIKHOONI BEGOO CHEJOORI ROO PANJEH BERAM? MAN FAGHAT PASHNEH BALADAM, DAHANAM SERVICE SHOD!!

P.P.S: For those who live in southern hemisphere (I don't like to mention their names here), I have to note that ski is a fun sport done on the snow. Snow is something white and cold coming down from the sky in the winter. Winter is a season including January, February and March.

Concordia's Open Day

Montreal's Metro

I am in montreal and I don't have access to internet yet. I just couldn't miss this topic for my photoblog that apparently Montreal's Metro runs on wheels, I mean on tires, just like buses. The only think I would not like to think of when I am getting into the metro, is having to get off the train because of a flat tire.

Chinese Garden

I am not expert in garden designs, but I have heard that there are two mains styles of gardens: Iranian gardens and Chinese gardens. (I am sure my friends can give you good hints about that). I have seen the Chinese gardens make you walk longer. They take you from a place to another, have curves on the roads, and have routs on which you have to stop in some certain places. On the other hand, in Iranian gardens there is a straight road from the door to the building in the middle of garden, where you can lay down and eat or drink. God I love my culture, a trace of exesjolialism everywhere!
Anyway, we went to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden the other day. We were lucky enough that a wise friend suggested to buy tickets from a tourist center before we go there. When we arrived there they said it's closed to public on that day but cause we already had the tickets, they let us in. We were the only visitors that day and we could enjoy a quiet peaceful atmosphere there.

There are some nice floor patterns in public places. While you are waiting for the bus or sky-train, you can make yourself busy by reading some wise sayings (like the second picture) from a sadistic artist.

Night Migration

We were walking in a dark cold winter night when we reached to this place. I stopped to take a picture of this house when we heard the voice of the wild geese flying to south. I tried to take a picture of them and you see the result in the second picture (no, they are neither illusions nor image noises). There were huge number of them in so many groups. That was a strange feeling. Late in the night, wide scene, vast snow covered farms, frozen river, short sky and the voice of winging geese over our head. God, It's a wild land!

Fire Department

Being a fireman is a kind of voluntary job here. Usually when their vehicles are approaching, people in both directions should keep right and stop till they pass. On nights like this, in which they are collecting food for homeless people for their christmas, people usually don't keep away from them anyway.

Ford Mountain

Ford mountain is one of the many mountains close to Chilliwack Lake and few miles away from the city. There was a snow few days ago and still the roads - and the trees in some places - were covered with the snow and small waterfalls on which the sun didn't shine were frozen. I felt hot anyway because of the sun and my warm coat. I also tried my new boots. Combined with sock liner, my toes where not freezing in the snow for the first time!
When you go to such a place, you are almost always the only one there. You can stay for hours and don't hear a noise but natural voices.

Local Farms

If you are living in a small city like Chilliwack, you can see local farms almost everywhere. It is somehow like a village: so many rivers, vast farms and wide horizons. Sometimes farmers use horses to ride whithin the farms. Some people have a small farm, with few plants and farm animals just as a hobby.

Frazer river - Chilliwack

Frazer river, starting from Rocky mountains and ending to Pacific, runs through Frazer Velley in BC. It's so wide, and wild in some parts. By driving for 5 minutes from our place we reached to this point, a national park beside the frazer river.

TransCanada Highway

The inner lanes (the most left lane in each direction) are reserved for buses or cars with more than two passengers. That really helps them in rush hours.
The distance scales are a bit different here. When I asked a guy that where this highway ends, he replied Alaska!

SkyTrain

The world's longest automated light rapid transit system, Vancouver's SkyTrain runs across some parts of the city and suburb areas. It is almost the fastest public transportation system in Vancouver. Buying the tickets is automatic, which means you can only buy tickets from those automatic machines and no personnel. The navigation is automatic too. There is no operator inside the trains, neither is any control cabin. Of course there are some facilities inside the trains to contact the operators in central operating house in case of emergency. There is also room for bicycles - which are almost popular here - inside the cabins.
Although it is not manual, there is a dedicated team of customer service staff monitoring vehicles and stations. Once I was at the station for the first time and I didn't know how to use those machine things, one of them appeared from nowhere and showed me the way to handle that with a very friendly attitude.

P.S: Do you know how Tehran Metro works? I was always wondering if it can be operated automaticly. Actually I think the guy in the control cabin is there only for safety reasons and has nothing to do.

Chain Stores

There are chain stores for everything all over in Canada. STAPLES sells office tools and equipments and FUTURE SHOP sells electronic devices (I could find a PC infrared USB adaptor in neither of them anyway). The funny thing is that when I asked them if they have it or not, they googled that to find the answer.

Driving

Most of the cars here are fully automatic, without any clutch or hand-break. It's just like riding a toy car in fun fair. I am really missing the joy of driving! The cars also have a button for cruising, which fixes the car speed on a a certain speed, so you don't even have to press the accelerate pedal. Such a boring job it is!
There are real school buses here. Those yellow ones. They have some special signals and when they turn on them, drivers in both directions should stop their vehicles and wait for the kids to pass the street.

Christmas is coming

You can smell the Christmas from the beginning of December, or even mid November. You can see lots of indoor and outdoor designs and decorations for that. When I was taking the first picture in the Cottonwood mall, a man was telling to his little daughter: "No, Santa has gone for lunch"!

Hope River

Hope river is one of the many rivers who flow across the city and it is only about 10 minutes by walk from our house. The main point of this river is the slow flow of water and green landscape on both sides. There are lots of wild ducks and geese on it. You can see them flying over the river, landing in the water, making nests and catching fishes all the times before winter (No, nobody tries to eat them). Last night we had gone for a walk and we saw huge groups of them forming Vs and migrating to the south. What a pity I had not my cell phone with me.

Roads

Roads are narrow here, usually only one lane (but such a wide one!) and you never see two vehicles beside each other in them. The intresting point with the roads is the convex curve (higher on the middle, lower on the sides), so in rainy days (which is almost everyday here) and even in the light snowy days like this, the roads are clean.

Vancouver night life

I had the chance to see one of vancouver nights, and lets say it's not a dead city at all. I heared you cannot see anybody in the streets after 6 pm, but at least it's not the same in downtown.

Wide Views

It's also another advantage of the small cities like Chilliwack, in which you can see miles and miles away without any obstacle. The mountains are a symbol of BC, you cannot see them in Montreal or Toronto!

Local farming market

It's not easy to find these places here. There are huge supermarkets anywhere but you can still find some local markets like this. The good thing is that you pay a lower tax by shopping here. There are also some organic products in these small markets.
